Electricity keeps the railways safe and passable 🚆

ProRail wants to completely stop using chemical herbicides before 2028. 🌱 But what is the sustainable alternative that works just as effectively?

Together with partners such as VolkerRail and Wimmersson – eWeeding, ProRail is researching innovative solutions – including eWeeding technology, which uses electricity to control weeds down to the root.

The electric eWeeding Roller and Trolley turn out to be surprisingly powerful: COâ‚‚-neutral, quiet, odourless and safe for soil and rail infrastructure. A green approach with great potential. âš¡

At VolkerRail, the technology is already being successfully applied on routes in Amsterdam Westhaven and the Veluwe. The difference between treated and untreated areas remains visible for up to seventy days.
Even the persistent Asian Knotweed turns out to be no match for the electrical treatment, after five years it has almost completely disappeared in many locations.

In the meantime, ProRail is continuing to test within the Sustainable Weed Management programme to determine which combination of technologies is the future.
One thing is certain: the time of glyphosate is over, electricity points the way to a cleaner track. 💡
