Electroherb ™, as an electrophysical treatment, controls weeds and invasive plants (Neophytes) without the use of herbicides. Due to its direct and residue-free mode of action, it avoids soil contamination or any other negative environmental impacts on the agroecosystem. With the use of high-powered electrical discharges, Electroherb ™ allows the destruction of plants to the root – with an effect that lasts longer or is comparable to that obtained with conventional agrochemicals.
Specially designed electrodes perform high-voltage discharges directed through the leaves to the root system, the soil and return to the passive electrodes of the Electroherb system ™. The death of the plant occurs immediately because electricity destroys the compartmentalization of vascular systems (xylem and phloem), causing irreparable lethal damage. The result of the application is an efficient and lasting effect on the treated plant species, without other consequences, such as chemical drift, toxic contaminations or resistances resulting from selection.

The physical contact with high-voltage electrodes touching weed plants enables the electric current to operate only at the time of application without residues and avoiding genetical selectivity. In theory for an effective electro-physical treatment of plants the minimum energy threshold for a lethal effect is related to the energy transferred to a single plant in dependence of the number and stability of vascular bundles to be damaged, the electrical resistance of the plant and the soil, the contact time and the electrode voltage. The efficacy of electrical weed control in a broader context additionally depends on the plant species, morphology, growth stage and population density. A special focus is on the destructions in the subterrestrial plant parts, the plants’ root systems. It is more severe under dry than moist soil conditions because the electric current can reach deeper root parts before being dissipated into the soil.
With our existing systems, we propose a broad range of applications for electrical weed control in the modern agriculture, but we are also presenting solutions for urban services or the home gardener usage. Therefore, in broad scaled greenhouse and international field studies, Zasso continuously optimizes the application recommendations of its Electroherb™ system especially, regarding agricultural important crop and weed plants.
